Five Things You May Not Think to Insure Before Going on Vacation

Your well-deserved vacation is almost here! You’re hammering out those final details, planning exciting activities for the family, and of course, searching for the best places to eat. What you’re probably NOT thinking about is protecting the valuable items you’ll be taking on your trip. But the truth is, while vacation is a time to sit back and relax, we often let our guard down, and that’s exactly why it’s important to make sure these valuable items have the proper insurance coverage. In the instance that any of your expensive items get lost, damaged or stolen while you’re focused on being stress-free, you’ll be more than happy you got them insured.

Not sure which items would really need insurance coverage? Here are five you probably wouldn’t think to insure.

#1 Jewelry. As far as jewelry goes, you should make sure your most valuable pieces are listed on your homeowners policy. Whether you find your jewelry missing after you’ve left it unattended by your beach chair or notice it slipped off after jumping into the lake, there’s always the chance that something could happen to that precious piece of jewelry while you’re on vacation.

#2 Cameras. We all love capturing those precious family moments, especially under a gorgeous sunset at the beach. But if you prefer to take along your high-end camera and equipment, like tripods or lenses, then we highly suggest listing these items on your homeowners insurance policy before you leave for your trip.

#3 Golf clubs. Most people wouldn’t even give it a second thought, but if you’re a golf lover then you know how expensive the hobby can be. If you are planning to bring your clubs along for some time on the golf course, it is not a bad idea to have coverage in the chance there is a loss.

#4 Fishing equipment. For many people, taking their own fishing equipment is a must when vacationing by the lake or ocean. If you’re the type that doesn’t mind spending a pretty penny on this type of gear, then we’d recommend getting coverage for your fishing poles and even lures that are of high value.

#5 Boat. Whether you’re going to the beach or the lake, if you have your own boat, it’s likely you’ll be taking it with you. While you probably already have it covered, a lot of people think they just need liability insurance, but the truth of the matter is, you may need full coverage or collision depending on its value and the type of area you’ll be using the boat.

It’s Never Too Late

Even if you’re reading this when you’re less than a week away from going on vacation, it’s so easy to list many of these items on your homeowners insurance policy. Typically, you can send a picture of the item along with the serial number and value (or an appraisal depending on the value) to your insurance agent, and they can quickly schedule them on there.

By simply taking a few minutes ensure that you have the proper coverage, you can continue on with your stress-free vacation without a care in the world, even if there is a loss.
